CONLON'S CARPET CLEANING BOOK

Starting a business today can be a risky adventure to say the least. Most people make the mistake of trying to start off too big and do not have the capital to carry them through. One of many problems in starting a business is having the equipment needed to do the job and keeping it affordable.

There are a lot of businesses out there in which one can get started. The challenge is finding the right one for you. Carpet cleaning is one that has a low start up cost and one you can work at your own pace.  In this book, I'll take you through the ropes of carpet cleaning. I'll explain the different methods and the advantages of each and their disadvantages and cost of each unit also

There are many kinds of part time or full time work that one can do from selling to doing service type work. The problem with selling is one has to find a product to sell and a way to market that product. On the other hand if one does service work, you market yourself.

There are many kinds of service work that one can do. The challenge is choosing the right one. One will find that you can do almost anything from house cleaning to yard work; it’s all up to you.

How much do you want to make? The answer to that question will have a big part in what line of work you choose. If one wanted to do house cleaning one can hope to make from $10-$15 per hour. To some of us that may sound like a lot of money, but when you remember that you have to pay income tax and all of your social security tax, (when you work for someone they pay half of this tax). It brings it down to about $5-$8 per hour. This may be fine just to bring in a little more money. If you want to start a business to grow to the point that it will be your main source of income then you will need to make more per hour.

A friend of mine told me about 20 years ago that his accountant told him that he had to be making around $25 per hour back then. The last time I went to the store things cost a lot more than 20 years ago. So today one needs to make between $35-$90 per hour.

I do not know of too many types of jobs that one can do for that kind of money. But with carpet cleaning, one can at times, make both ends of the scale. The carpet cleaning opportunity is one that will allow you to start off slow and build to a full time business. One thing you have to remember is that in carpet cleaning you are not working by the hour; you are rendering a service to your customer.

How can one start this kind of business? In my book you will learn how to start a carpet cleaning business! Just take a look at the table of contents and see what this book will help you in.

GETTING STARTED

The first thing we have to do in order to get started is decide what kind of carpet cleaning you will do. There are three basic kinds of methods that one can choose from.

·       STEAM CLEANING

·       FOAM CLEANING  (SHAMPOOING)

·       BONNET CLEANING

SETTING UP YOUR BUSINESS

In getting started one needs to have a goal in mind. How do I get started? Do I start full time or part time? What about advertising? There is a danger in advertising, it can be expensive and it could make it hard going at first. The dangers are not doing enough and doing too much. The newspaper is a good place to start, some carry a business section where you can................................................................

COMPARISON OF CARPET CLEANING METHODS

By Joseph Gunterman
Head of Cabin Service, United Air Lines

1.   FOAM provides nothing more than a surface cleaning through the application of detergents. Under the best conditions, only 5% to 10% of any detergent residues are removable............................

2.   DRY CHEMICAL must be used (brushed in) in well-ventilated areas due to toxicity. It can harm the operator and requires excessive vacuuming to remove unwanted residue build-up. In addition, strong chemical odors............................................................................

3.   STEAM of course, is not really steam. It can be hot, or warm, or even cold water depending on the operator. Even though water is the .............................................................................................

4.   ARGOSHEEN causes none of these problems. It cleans by simply transferring soil from the carpet fibers to cotton pads or mops, which is subsequently washed down the drain. It also cleans without foam or excessive applications of water. Argosheen is fast and dries in minutes. On a large expanse of carpet (lobbies, halls), an ARGONAUT Towel Machine or cotton pads under a rotary machine (Bonnet Cleaning) can clean up to 1000 square feet per hour................................................................

Understanding Carpet Soil

To give us a better understanding of the cleaning methods we use and how they work, we first need to take a look at the problem of soil and its removal. Cleaning is not a simple matter since many variables are involved that will affect the end result. We can control some of the variables, others we can do little or nothing about. For maximum results, we need to utilize as many of the variables as we possibly can to assist us.............................................................................................................

HOW TO REDUCE WEAR

There are two things that will help to reduce the wear of the carpet. First on the list is to keep your carpet clean by vacuuming it regularly. The second way to reduce wear is by keeping the carpet clean and oil free. When your carpet has oil build up your vacuum cleaner will not be able to get the dirt up. When this happens the oil and dirt act like sandpaper and break down the carpet fiber by friction causing matting and wear. A regular cleaning with Argosheen will help keep the oils out of your carpet. Your carpet will last a lot longer and keep looking great. How often should one clean ones carpet to remove oils? This depends on ones life style. Each ones carpet is different. I like to ask, “How often do you mop your kitchen floor?” You mop to get up what a vacuum can’t get out. The same is true of carpet; your vacuum cannot get out oils and water-based spills. If there is oil buildup in your carpet, then your vacuum cleaner will not be able to get all the dirt up. The dirt and oil mix, your carpet fibers start to brake down the fiber, causing carpet wear and matting. So it is important to have your carpet cleaned on a regular basis, doing so, your carpet will last much longer and keep that new look.
